Tai O Fishing Village





Tai O, one of the 'must see' attractions and remaining fishing villages in Hong Kong. Located at the northwestern part of Lantau Island, also known as the ”Venice of the East” was once the largest inhabited settlement on Lantau Island.


Tai O Museum



The Tai O museum which was established by Rural Committee. The museum in order to help tourists or visitors to know and understand more about the history of Tai O with a variety of exhibits from Tai O's past such as salt making tools, fishing tools and wedding ceremony of Tanka people

Tai O wet market


Browsing in the stalls and shops around Tai O is always a lot of fun. There have a lots of stalls with dried seafood products such as shrimp pastes, fish maw and salted fishes. Many travelers like to purchase some fish paste and salted fish as a souvenir as well as Hong Kong resident. Also, you can taste the yummy Hong Kong style street-side snack such as mini bowl pudding, cha guo and Chinese herbal tea in the Tai O market.


Chinese stilt-house




Tai O's stilt-houses are huts built on stilts in a narrow river channel and one of the most distinctive characteristics of Tai O. The original form of stilt houses is a fishing boat. As fishermen are living on the boat, the boat parking along the bank gradually becomes a shelter. Now we can see that stilt houses are supported by bamboo and concrete pillars which have plunged into the sea bed. You can imagine that the original form of the oldest stilt houses, were lifted up by several columns of bamboo. What amazing it is!


Kwan Tai Temple


Kwan Tai Temple is the oldest temple in Lantau island. This temple honors Kwan Tai, the God of War and Righteousness and was built in the reign of Hong Zhi (1488 – 1505) during the Ming dynasty. In real life, Kwan Tai was a general renowned for his loyalty and is said to protect devotees from evil.

  1. Tai O certainly looks colorful and unique. I've only been there once on a hot summer day. Should go back again in autumn so I can take a more pleasant walk and revisit the places you've written about.
